Branched flow

Contributor: Yi-Ting Tu

When light travels through a medium whose refractive index has random spatial fluctuations (with correlation length much larger than the wavelength of the light), a tree-like pattern called branched flow will appear. This simulation shows this phenomenon using a refractive index function which is a sum of several cosine functions with random-like amplitudes, wave vectors, and phases.
